Usher has spoken out in defense of Sean “Diddy” Combs, emphasizing his cultural impact and mentorship despite recent legal convictions. In an interview with Jabari Young for Forbes’ series The Enterprise Zone, the singer said Diddy’s contributions should not be overlooked.

“I don’t have anything negative to say about Sean Combs because my experience was not what the world has seen and how he’s been, you know, misrepresented,” Usher said, per BOSSIP. “I’m not saying that every man is perfect. I’m not saying that all of us don’t have flaws, but I can’t with any sense of humanity not recognize the valuable contributions that this man made.”

Usher described Diddy as a “legacy figure” whose work has benefited many. He first met Diddy as a teenager in 1994 and the music mogul later executive produced Usher’s debut album, providing guidance and mentorship.

“Puff was a mentor above…I think that the idea of the level of discipline came with that time in business, especially in an era that was trying to prove itself culturally in hip-hop,” Usher said. He highlighted Diddy’s ability to monetize culture and create influence across music and business that transcends race, describing it as “colorless.”

“That’s who I see that man as. And that’s what I choose to remember,” Usher added, acknowledging that success comes with trials but emphasizing the importance of legacy and contribution.

In October, Diddy was sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty on two counts of transportation for purposes of prostitution involving Cassie Ventura, a former girlfriend, and male sex workers. He was acquitted of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking charges.

Despite these legal issues, Usher continues to highlight Diddy’s mentorship, innovation in hip-hop, and enduring cultural influence, underscoring the distinction between personal flaws and professional legacy.
