Dr. Umar Johnson, the self-proclaimed “Prince of Pan-Africanism,” is once again at the center of controversy—this time for a financial crisis that’s ignited fierce debate across social media. In a recent video posted online, Johnson claimed that both his personal bank account and the account tied to his long-promised Frederick Douglass Marcus Garvey Academy (FDMG) were frozen due to a hacking attempt.

The Plea for Donations

Johnson’s message to his followers was direct: he needs financial help. With his accounts inaccessible, he asked supporters to send money via Apple Pay or PayPal to help him and “Queen Mother Ifantunde” cover basic expenses until the issue is resolved. He framed the situation as a temporary setback, promising to bounce back once the bank completes its investigation.

“For my loyal supporters out there, if you can spare a few dollars… please hit my Apple Pay or hit my PayPal,” Johnson said in his video.

The Lingering Questions About FDMG Academy

This isn’t the first time Johnson’s fundraising efforts have drawn scrutiny. Since announcing the FDMG Academy in 2010, he’s raised money for what he described as a private school for African American children focused on academic excellence and cultural awareness. Yet, nearly 15 years later, the school remains unbuilt—a fact that continues to fuel skepticism.

Public Reaction: Support, Skepticism, and Satire

Social media users were quick to respond, and the reactions ranged from sympathetic to scathing. Some questioned the logistics of Johnson’s financial situation:

  • Why no backup accounts or emergency funds?

  • Why trust “colonizer banks” with all his money?

  • Why not seek help from family or friends?

Others mocked the timing of his plea, noting that asking for donations at the end of the month—when many are financially stretched—is unlikely to succeed.

“Dr. Umar, you know damn well asking for money from Black folks at the end of the month is an 80% no,” one TikTok user joked.

Scam or Misfortune?

While Johnson insists the freeze was due to hacking, critics argue that the lack of transparency and the long-standing delays with the FDMG Academy raise red flags. Is this a genuine financial emergency, or another chapter in a saga of questionable fundraising?

Final Thoughts

Dr. Umar Johnson remains a polarizing figure. His passionate rhetoric and unapologetic stance on Black empowerment have earned him a loyal following—but also intense scrutiny. Whether this latest plea is a legitimate cry for help or a manipulative tactic, one thing is clear: the public is watching, and the conversation isn’t going away anytime soon.
